Clueless...

Monday nights, I sit here at my dining room table, the rest of my family in bed, and I just write with not much planning or forethought.  As much time as I spend on social media, somehow I missed the memo that last Tuesday was #BlackOutTuesday, a day to be spent in silence recognizing the importance of the Black Lives Matter movement.    I typed my email last Monday night like always, got up Tuesday, went about my morning, responded to emails and did my normal posts on social media to kick off the week as I always do when we open up the shop on Tuesdays.  It was very much business as usual for me.  It wasn't intentional, I literally didn't figure it out until about halfway through the day.

Totally clueless.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't clueless about what is happening in the world.  I posted some of my thoughts on Instagram the Saturday before, but I had somehow just missed Black Out Tuesday all together.

I’m from Louisville KY. I'm heartbroken by the destruction I saw happening on TV in the city I love. Where my parents and sister still live. But I'm more heartbroken by what I saw on video happening to George Floyd. And for the deaths of so many others. And I understand the rage. I wish it wasn’t happening, I’m not condoning it, but I understand why people of color may feel like they have no other way to be heard.

Enough is enough.

Where are you Lord?  Please intervene and open my eyes to my own privilege and biases. How many more videos will there have to be? A child of God suffocated in the street crying for his mama. I have never seen anything so horrific and unbelievable. We have to do better.

That could be my son.

Except that it probably wouldn’t be, because he’s white.

I'm guilty of not understanding white privilege. I’ve been one to say, “I worked hard in school, I work hard for the things I have...it’s not about being privileged” but I saw someone post recently and a lightbulb went off for me. It said “having white privilege doesn’t mean you haven’t had a hard life. It means that the color of your skin isn’t one of the things making it hard”.

I've been one to say "All Lives Matter", and of course they do, but after seeing what happened to George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery & Breonna Taylor I can no longer remain ignorant of the injustice and inequality in this world.

Help us Lord. Heal our land.

Black Lives Matter.

And even feeling that way, when a customer sent me a message this week and asked if I would please highlight the Makers of Color we have here at Plume, I was hesitant.  While spotlightjng makers is something I love to do and do often, I don’t normally introduce them by saying “She’s Black” “He’s White”. I also didn’t want to at all appear like I was trying to jump on some bandwagon or take advantage of such a precious and important message for the sake of marketing.

But I also realize I have a platform to share for good.

One of my best and most favorite partnerships here at Plume, since 2016 is a beautiful Maker of Color, Woman Owned and Operated business...GOPO Gourmet Popcorn.  Brooke Bartlett and her husband Nick have built their business from literally nothing.
